Sell Your Home in Winter

Preparing your home for sale during the winter months is easy. Give your home an attractive winter makeover to improve your chances of making a sale this winter. Follow these four steps and your home will look inviting to prospective buyers.

1. Create a Wonderful First Impression
Winter gardens can sometimes lack colour. If your garden does not look its best during winter, do not despair. Purchase flowering plants in decorative pots from your local nursery and place them in a prominent position. You can place flowering pot plants on your front door-step, on a patio, or use them to line the pathway to your door. Alternatively, place a colourful hanging basket where it is sure to attract the eye of your prospective buyer as he enters your home.

Mow your front lawns, weed your gardens, and remove any children’s toys from the area. Your home should look inviting to a potential buyer before he steps through the front door.

2. Make Sure your Home is Well Heated
Turn on your heaters, or air-conditioner, before the prospective buyer arrives to view your home. On very cold days, turn your oven on for about an hour before the buyer is due to arrive. The oven will provide extra warmth in your kitchen. Turn the oven off before the prospective buyer actually arrives.

If you own a wood fire, be sure it is alight. The flickering flames and warmth from a wood fire provide a romantic atmosphere that is a wonderful incentive for a prospective buyer to purchase your home.

Light scented candles in your kitchen, bathroom, or living room. If you are placing candles in two or more rooms, be sure you choose the same scent throughout the house. Scented candles will provide a prospective buyer with a positive association of your home. Candles create an illusion of warmth and comfort that will appeal to the people viewing your home.

3. Give your Bedrooms an Instant Winter Makeover
Purchase new bedspreads or quilts for your beds. Bedspreads or quilts that touch the floor are an ideal choice, because buyers cannot see under the beds. Choose rich, vibrant colours for your new bedspreads or quilts. Vibrant colours will enhance your winter colour scheme and create a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Remove any clutter and personal items from bedside tables. Place scented candles or table lamps on the bedside tables. Choose coloured candles or table lamps that complement the colour scheme of your new bedspreads or quilts. Light the candles, or turn on the table lamps, just before your prospective buyer arrives.

4. Create a Home for all Seasons
Turn on your overhead lighting and lamps regardless of the time of day. A well lit home will appear warmer and more inviting. Assess the views from your windows. If your winter views are uninspiring, draw the curtains to create a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Display a photograph of your home that shows your home in its best season. For example, your home and garden may look beautiful surrounded by bright, spring flowers. A photograph of your home will interest a potential buyer, as he will be able to imagine himself in the home in all seasons of the year.

First impressions are important, so be sure the outside of your home is attractive to a potential buyer. Keep your home well heated to create a warm and cosy atmosphere in your bedrooms and living areas. Display a seasonal photograph to show buyers how beautiful the home will look in other seasons of the year. By following the four steps, you will increase your chances of selling your home in winter.
